What is M365 Directory?
Microsoft 365 directory data describes an organization’s user accounts, groups and group memberships. Microsoft Graph provides access to these directory records alongside other Microsoft 365 data.
How it works with Fortiana
A team name in a conversation and a group in the directory are different kinds of information. M365 Directory contributes the user, group and membership records themselves. These can be considered alongside the separate work or conversation record, without treating group membership as proof that somebody owns a task.
What Fortiana can use
- Users
- Groups
- Memberships
Not included: Mail; Chat messages; Files.
How you can use it
For example, you can ask questions such as:
- Which users are listed in this directory?
Read the available user records, keeping the directory separate from the content of those users’ work. - Who is listed as a member of the delivery group?
Use the provided membership records rather than inferring membership from a conversation. - Which groups appear in the available data?
Review the directory’s group records as context for references to teams elsewhere.
Before you connect
- Identify the directory. Confirm which M365 environment and directory records are needed for the initial connection.
- Involve the directory owner. Identify who can review authorization requirements and the intended user, group and membership scope.
- Separate membership from permissions. Clarify whether the use case needs directory information or an access-enforcement capability; these are different requirements.
Does group membership prove task ownership?
No. Membership describes a directory relationship. Responsibility for a task must come from a work record or an explicit agreement, not from membership alone.
